After you’ve chosen a new boat, it’s time to start enjoying it. However, as a new owner, there is a lot to be mindful of to stay safe and protect your vessel. Below you’ll find a brief guide to help you get the most out of your watercraft.

Maintenance

Even new boats require regular maintenance to stay in good condition. You should keep it clean and have it inspected annually for damages or problems. The motor will need maintenance, too, such as changing the oil, inspecting the fuel lines and primer bulb, checking for water in the fuel, and flushing the engine after each outing. Your boat will also need anti-corrosive treatments to keep it looking new. Finally, should you run into any issues on the water, head to a boat repair specialist right away.

Safety

new boatsTaking precautions while out on the water is critical for keeping you and others safe. Everyone should wear life jackets, and you should never go faster than the speed limit. Whoever is steering the boat should not be under the influence of any substances, as they must always stay alert. Check the weather before going boating, and don’t take unnecessary risks by navigating rough waters. You should have flotation devices on board to assist any passengers that fall off or get into trouble in the water, and everyone should be familiar with the various safety features and equipment on board. Make sure you take a cell phone with you so you can call for help if your vessel fails or you have an accident.

Responsibility

Being responsible and taking care of the water you sail in keeps it in better shape for you and others to enjoy. Don’t litter, and always follow your local fishing and boating laws. If you notice something concerning in the water—such as garbage, suspicious boating activity, or an unusual number of dead fish—always report it to the appropriate authorities. Never go out on the water if your boat isn’t running efficiently or has a leak. If you spot another vessel that needs assistance, offer to help them out.
