As summer knocks on the door, you’re likely to start spending more time outside. To make sure your yard is in tip-top condition for the season, give some special attention to your lawn and landscaping. Here are some of the most important factors to keep in mind as you work to improve your outdoor space during the warm months.

How to Improve Your Landscaping This Summer

1. Water Deeply, Not Daily

Proper hydration is important for your lawn and any other plants included in your landscape design. Instead of watering your yard daily, just do this a few times per week but for a longer period each time. This allows water to travel deeper into the ground and get to all the roots without over-watering and compacting the soil. Additionally, try to water first thing in the morning rather than midday so the water doesn’t evaporate in the hot sun before it can be absorbed.

2. Mow Your Lawn at a High Setting

Your lawnmower should have a few different length settings so you can control the exact cut of your grass. While it may seem tempting to go right to that lowest setting so you can mow less often, it’s actually better for your grass to keep it fairly high. This protects the soil below your grass so it can more effectively absorb water and other nutrients.

3. Aerate & Fertilize

landscapingYour lawn doesn’t just need water and the occasional cut to stay healthy throughout the summer. Aeration is the process of breaking up compacted soil so it can more effectively absorb nutrients, and fertilizer provides those nutrients. Look for a fertilizer that also helps you control weeds and pests throughout the season.

4. Add Regionally Appropriate Plants

Going beyond your lawn, it’s important to add some variety to your outdoor space with other plants and flowers. When choosing these items, try to stick with those that are native to the area or at least approved for use in your climate. This will make maintenance much easier and allow your plants to thrive in summer conditions.
