4th of July festivities are just around the corner, and if you have a dog, you want to make sure your furry friend is safe throughout the celebration since many parts can be detrimental to them. Here are some pet care tips to protect them this year.

How to Protect Your Dogs on the 4th of July

1. Alcoholic Beverages

Relaxing with a cocktail or beer is a popular way to celebrate, but dogs shouldn’t sip your drinks. Consuming alcohol can lead to severe illness and even death in dogs. Never leave your drinks unattended, and keep your dog away from the beverage cooler.

2. Party Food

Don’t give your pup scraps from your plate and advise other partygoers to adhere to your rule. Have plenty of treats on hand so your dog doesn’t feel tempted to sneak anything from the barbecue.

3. Pet-Friendly Products

If you’ll be spending time outside, both you and your dog should wear sunscreen and insect repellent. The products you use on your pup should be specifically formulated for dogs; those for humans may induce negative side effects like vomiting or lethargy.

4. Outdoor Fluids

Citronella candles help keep the bugs at bay during a barbecue, but if your dog ingests them, they can upset their stomach. Likewise, keep them away from tiki torch oils and lighter fluids for the grill.

5. Fireworks Show

The loud noises of a big fireworks display can startle your dog, and the crowds at community events can be overwhelming. Instead, keep your dog inside a room where the fireworks noise is the least intrusive. Give them their favorite toys or blankets to reassure them, and lower the blinds if the show is visible from the window.
