The summer months have arrived with the promise of beach trips and hours of fun in the sun. While you may want to bring your dog along for every activity, overexposure to intense heat can be dangerous for your companion. Taking seasonal precautions is a critical part of dog care, so protect your pet’s health with these five summer safety tips.

5 Dog Care Safety Tips for the Summer

1. Always Provide Water & Shade

The higher the temperature, the more susceptible pets are to dehydration. Give your dog continuous access to fresh, clean water, and make sure they have plenty of shade when outdoors. Bring a collapsible travel bowl and bottles of water wherever you take your pup.

2. Never Leave Them in Hot Cars

On hot days, the sun can essentially turn your car into an oven, so never leave your pet in a hot car. The ASPCA reports that on an 85-degree day, the interior temperature of a car can jump to 120 degrees in just 30 minutes. Immediately call local law enforcement or animal control if you see a pet trapped in a hot car.

3. Limit Time Outdoors

4. Watch Their Paws

Asphalt can become scorching hot during the summer. If the pavement is too painful for your bare feet, it’s likely hot enough to burn your dog as well. Paw pads are sensitive, so keep them off of sidewalks and streets when the sun is beating down. Going on walks in the early morning and evening will be more comfortable for your dog.

5. Know the Symptoms of Heatstroke

Learn the signs of heatstroke, including excessive panting, vomiting, fever, dizziness, difficulty breathing, a discolored tongue, and lethargy. If you notice any of these symptoms, quickly bring your dog inside, treat them with cool towels, and take them to the pet hospital.
