Whether you’re a new truck driver or a seasoned veteran, summer brings its own set of roadway challenges. You can celebrate National Safety Month this June by learning some additional ways you can keep yourself and others safe while driving. During your next summer trip, try following these tips to help you make it to your destination safely.

How Truck Drivers Can Travel Safely in the Summer

1. Protect Yourself Against the Sun

While you may think your truck provides enough coverage from damaging ultraviolet rays, you’re still at a serious risk for developing a sunburn or odd tan lines. In addition to applying sunscreen during your haul, give yourself better protection from the sun by wearing a hat, sunglasses, and long sleeves to cover your skin.

2. Watch Out for More Drivers

This may also include drivers who are in a new part of town or are distracted by companions they’re traveling with. To help decrease your risk of an accident, make sure you are aware of the vehicles around you, including motorcyclists who enjoy biking in the nice weather.

3. Check the Forecast

The summer months can mean severe weather—from heavy rainstorms and flooding to lightning and high winds. When planning for your next haul, check the weather forecast to prepare for any storms you may have to drive through. This gives you plenty of time to take a different route or plan stops to avoid any heavy storms.

4. Perform General Maintenance

Summer is the perfect time as a truck driver to perform a general maintenance check on your vehicle. You’ll likely be logging thousands of miles over the next few months, so make sure you evaluate the tire levels and check the electrical and cooling systems. Preventive maintenance is the best way to ensure a safe vehicle and trip.
