Taking care of your lawn will help it develop lush grass and maintain an appealing landscape. But with higher temperatures and more frequent lawn usage during the summer, some additional care is necessary to keep the grass looking its best. Below are a few lawn care tips to help you in this process.

How to Care for a Lawn During the Summer

1. Keep Grass Two to Three Inches High

Warmer season grasses should not be over-mowed. A general rule is to mow once every two weeks and set the blades at two to three inches in height. Maintaining a higher height helps the roots take deeper hold and provides ground-level shade to the surrounding landscape, discouraging the growth of weeds.

2. Practice Smart Watering

landscapeGrass needs specific conditions to thrive. During the summer, give your lawn at least an inch of water per week. Invest in a rain gauge and check it daily to keep tabs on how much moisture the grass is getting; adjust your watering schedule and amounts as necessary. Aim to water early in the morning since there tends to be more moisture in the air and less intense levels of sunlight. The water won't evaporate as quickly, and your landscape will have more time to absorb the moisture.

3. Minimize Traffic

Lawns tend to get a lot of use in the summer. In relatively little time, the grass can get tamped down, damaged, or discolored. As much as possible, minimize foot traffic across the lawn during the summer. For particularly high-traffic areas, such as the path to the backyard pool or patio, consider installing paving stones to help preserve the life and health of the lawn.
