With so many different brands and types of laundry detergent, it can be confusing to know what to use on your clothing. While they all get the job done, some types of detergent are better targeted toward specific fabrics or stains. Before hitting the laundromat, check out the guide below to learn the differences among powder, liquid, and pods.

Pros & Cons of Each Type of Detergent

Pods

If you’re tired of measuring liquid, pods are a simple and convenient option to use at the laundromat—toss one or two in the machine and throw your clothes on top. Because they’re pre-measured, you don’t have to guess how much–or how little–liquid or powder to use. Their price is the main drawback. You may also need at least two pods to handle larger and dirtier loads of clothing, which can add up quickly for families. Another problem is that many kids have mistaken them for candy, so always keep them out of reach.

Liquid

laundromatLiquid detergents are the most popular choice. With liquid, you can pretreat stains by pouring the detergent directly onto your clothes. It’s particularly useful for scrubbing out grease and oil stains too. Liquid detergent also dissolves quickly. The main problem with it, however, is that people tend to use too much, wasting money and leaving residue on clothes. Another downside is that the plastic packaging isn’t eco-friendly, and it can be heavy for those with disabilities.

Powder

Powder detergent is less expensive per load of laundry than the other forms of detergent. On average, it also lasts longer than liquid detergent and pods. Powder detergent works well if you’re getting out a tough stain like blood or dirt, and it’s more environmentally friendly thanks to its cardboard packaging. However, if you wash with cold water, your powder detergent might not fully dissolve, and leftover residue could stick to your clothing.
