A live-in caretaker helps seniors tackle daily tasks and chores while also offering some much-needed companionship. Caregivers can also assist seniors with fitness and exercise, which is crucial to maintain a healthy body. Below are a few low-impact exercises your senior can perform.

4 Fitness Activities for Seniors

1. Swimming

Swimming offers a full-body workout capable of strengthening all major muscle groups, including the legs and arms. It’s also easy on joints, since water reduces added pressure and strain. If you have a pool in your home—or if your town has a pool open to the public—schedule swimming sessions with your senior and your live-in caretaker.

2. Yoga

live-in caretakerYoga is a great way to improve balance, as it increases core strength. Your loved one can start their routine with the mountain pose, where they stand still—shoulders back—with their big toes touching. They should inhale and exhale six to eight times. This pose promotes balance. Next, allow them to try the cobbler’s pose, which promotes strong hips and legs. In this pose, they join the soles of their feet together while their knees point outward and their hips open. They inhale and exhale five to seven times, holding their chin parallel to the ground.

3. Walking

Doctors recommend that seniors over 65 complete at least 2.5 hours of aerobic exercise per week. Walking is an ideal option, as seniors and their live-in caretakers can take daily walks around a park, the neighborhood, or a simple hike trail.

4. Cycling

Aerobic activity burns fat and improves heart health. If your senior enjoys riding a bike, their caretaker can take them on a simple stroll in an area around town that is less frequented by cars. If a senior doesn’t have a bike, purchase a stationary bicycle at home. This way, they can strengthen leg muscles and build endurance at home.
