Purchasing a used car is a smart way to snag a quality vehicle at a fraction of the price. However, it comes with some risks, too. Some car shoppers worry about getting duped into buying something beyond repair, but there are a few easy steps you can take to avoid this problem. First, do your research. And second, ask the right questions.

What to Ask Before Purchasing a Used Car

1. Does It Have a Title?

All vehicles have titles, including used cars. Ask for one before negotiating. If the seller doesn’t have it, there may still be an outstanding loan on the vehicle. Or perhaps, the seller misplaced it. While both issues can be resolved, think about whether it’s worth the time and effort.

Aside from the title, inquire about the car’s history and try to trace ownership if it has changed hands over the years. If the seller is the original owner, ask how long they have owned it. Some car dealerships provide vehicle history reports at no extra cost.

2. Is It Well-Maintained?

used carHistory reports only cover severe damages on the car and not its maintenance records. Determine whether a used car was adequately maintained by asking for its service and repair records, including receipts. Be wary of used cars that rarely stepped in an auto shop for routine upkeep — there might be unresolved issues lurking under the hood. Never hesitate to raise questions on how the car was driven before the sale — on country winding roads versus stop-and-go traffic, and short trips versus long drives.

3. Has It Ever Been in an Accident?

Major accidents, especially high-impact collisions, are often noted in the history report, but go ahead and ask the seller to confirm the car’s accident history. An outright denial of this request is considered a red flag, so steer clear of those vehicles. Inquire about fender benders too, and how these were addressed.

4. Can a Mechanic Inspect It?

Ask this question only if you’re serious about buying the car since a thorough inspection from a mechanic can be extensive. If a private seller refuses your request, it’s better to walk away than buy something blindly. While you’re at it, request a test drive as well to get a feel of the car. It’s also the perfect opportunity for you to look under the floor mats and in between crevices for signs of neglect or damage.
