Recreational vehicles (RVs) have become an increasingly popular purchase across the nation. People of all ages are recognizing that traveling in an RV offers more freedom and flexibility than other forms of transportation. However, there is still some confusion surrounding RV insurance. The following information offers some guidance so that RV owners can make knowledgeable decisions about coverage.

A Guide to RV Insurance

Is RV insurance required?

Under Texas law, RVs that can be driven on their own must be insured. The state’s minimum liability requirements are $30,000 for bodily injuries per person, $60,000 for bodily injuries per accident, and $25,000 for property damage but we recommend higher limits be purchased to better protect yourself. If you are responsible for causing a collision that results in another party getting hurt or damages their property, your policy will cover their loss and any legal costs that arise should you get sued.

What does it cover?

RV insuranceThe coverage that’s offered in standard RV insurance policies can vary from one provider to the next, but generally, they provide a type of protection similar to an auto policy. Along with liability, you may choose to add collision, comprehensive, and uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage to your policy to help pay for repairs. You will also be covered if your RV and its contents are stolen or damaged. Additional options include total loss replacement, towing and roadside assistance, vacation liability, personal effects, and emergency expenses.

How much coverage do I need?

The amount of coverage you need to sufficiently protect an RV depends on a variety of factors. You must carefully consider your specific circumstances and risks. Some key considerations are which class of RV you own, whether or not it will be a full-time residence, where you plan to travel, if the vehicle has expensive custom features, and the total value of the personal belongings you have on board.

Can I reduce my policy premium?

The majority of providers have discounts available to lower RV insurance costs. Often, you can reduce rates by bundling multiple policies (Home & Auto) with the same insurer, setting a higher deductible, enrolling in an RV safety course, and maintaining a clean driving record. We can make sure you’re receiving all the savings you qualify for.
