As temperatures rise, people turn on the air conditioning for the first time of the season. Use your unit properly and enlist the help of an HVAC contractor to increase its effectiveness and maximize its lifespan. Stay cool all summer long — without making your system work harder than it needs to — with these tips.

Do:

Schedule service with an HVAC contractor.

During a routine service, your HVAC contractor will clean and inspect the unit. They’ll find any issues and fix them before they cause more serious problems, such as a breakdown on a hot day. Schedule a maintenance checkup before you turn on the system for the first time. That way, you’ll avoid more costly repairs should something go wrong.

Install a programmable thermostat.hvac contractor

Programmable thermostats are affordable and well worth the small investment. Set your system at one temperature while you’re home in the summer, and then program it to slightly increase while you’re away during the day or sleeping at night. If you time it to kick back on just before you get home in the evening or wake in the morning, you’ll save your system unnecessary work without compromising comfort.

Don’t:

Forget about air filters.

Air filters should be changed once every four to six weeks during the hot season. A clean filter will encourage airflow and prevent the unit’s evaporator coil from freezing up. A clogged filter will result in the air coming out of your vents too slowly while driving up your utility bills.

Cool empty rooms.

You should only be paying to cool the rooms you’re actually using. Close the vents in all your empty spaces, such as an unoccupied guest room, then close the door. Close closet doors, as well. If you have a ductless mini-split system, use the thermostat to customize the temperature in each location.
