Summer’s almost here, but there’s still time to squeeze in some spring cleaning. As you tidy up around your home, don’t forget about your plumbing. Devoting some extra attention to your house’s pipes, faucets, and appliances can have a drastic effect on the quality of your daily life at home. Here are some steps to take as you clean your plumbing.

4 Ways to Clean Your Plumbing Before Summer

1. Remove Mineral Deposits From Faucets

Lime scale and minerals can build up on your faucets over time. Although these materials are natural and usually not harmful, they’re visually unappealing and can slow down your water pressure. To deal with these deposits, wipe down your faucets and apply a CLR (Calcium Lime Rust) cleaner — or make a natural version using lemon juice or vinegar. Use a plastic bag to surround the faucet with the cleaning liquid until the mineral deposits have broken down, and then rinse the faucet with water.

2. Fix Slow Drains

3. Check for Leaks

As you clean around your home, keep an eye out for water stains, puddles, or water droplets coming from your pipes. Even small leaks can lead to lots of water waste over time. They can even cause damage to your floors, walls, and other home fixtures. If you suspect a leak or want to have your entire plumbing system inspected, call a professional plumber right away.

4. Clear Your Garbage Disposal

Your garbage disposal works hard to get rid of all the unwanted scraps you toss down your drain. To keep it clean, you should periodically clear it out with a mix of baking soda and vinegar. Let the mixture bubble for a few minutes while it breaks down any leftover food particles. Finally, flush out the system with hot water.
