Your car is designed to tell you when it needs something. Of course, it’s important to bring in your vehicle for regular maintenance like oil changes and tire rotations, but it’s also important to keep an eye on your car’s dashboard. Here are a few lights and alerts that may indicate you need auto repair or maintenance.

3 Dashboard Alerts That Indicate the Need for Auto Repair

1. Check Engine Light

One of the more familiar lights on your dashboard, this light will either appear in the shape of an engine or as the words “check engine.” It usually is not especially urgent, but it does require you to bring your vehicle into an auto repair shop since the problem will need to be diagnosed by a professional. This light can indicate anything from a small oil leak to your gas cap being loose.

2. Battery Light

If your vehicle is working, you currently have enough of a charge to run, but it may not last for long. You’ll need to have a professional look at it right away to determine whether your battery needs to be replaced or if there’s a problem with the battery terminal.

3. Coolant Warning Light

This alert looks like a small thermometer and is illuminated in red when your car is overheating. If you act right away, the fix should be fairly simple. You may just be low on coolant, but make sure to take your vehicle to an auto repair shop immediately so it doesn’t overheat and cause other damage to your engine. If there’s not a shop right around the corner, pull over and have a towing company bring your vehicle in.
