Putting an end to annoying dripping sounds isn’t the only reason to fix a leaky pipe. Even a slow drip can equal numerous gallons of water waste and steeper service fees from your utility company. Although you should call a plumber for permanent solutions to the problem, you can try the below tricks to temporarily stop the leak while awaiting professional help.

3 Temporary Fixes for Leaky Pipes

1. Put Plumbing Epoxy on Cracks

Similar to glue, plumbing epoxy can be used to seal the source of the leak. First, turn off the water supply and look for the punctured pipe. Coat the damaged area in the pliable material, which will mold to the surface and fill the opening. The barrier will harden to prevent water from escaping. However, epoxy will break down over time, which is why you should still enlist a plumber for help.

2. Use a Clamp to Cover the Damage

Alternatively, place a plastic or rubber patch over the puncture, and use electrical tape to keep it in place. For an extra layer of stability, put the clamp over the materials. Although the clamp will remain secure, moisture will eventually break down the adhesive on the tape, so this is only a short-term solution.

3. Turn the Main Water Shutoff Valve

Makawao-Hawaii-plumberIf the leaking pipe is behind a wall or under the floor, it could cause major water damage inside your home. A plumber will need to investigate, so activate the main water shutoff valve in the meantime. Temporarily stopping the flow of water through all channels will help keep the damage to a minimum.
