4 Habits to Pick Up as a CNA

1. Punctuality

Timeliness and punctuality are cornerstones of CNA life. Not only does being on time for your shift prevent serious scheduling issues and problems for everyone else on your team, but it also helps keep patients safe. Report vitals and anything else to do with a patient’s health and wellness immediately, as it can prevent serious complications that potentially endanger the individual’s life.

2. Exceptional Listening Skills

Learning to listen closely to your superiors helps ensure everything moves along in a timely fashion so patients and their families do not have to wait as long. It also helps you learn new medical terminology and phrases so you can provide patients with more detailed answers. To practice better listening, always make eye contact when asking questions, and if you’re not sure what was said, rephrase the answer in your own words.

3. Staying Calm

Getting in the habit of staying calm can be challenging at first, but it will help put those around you at ease and more willing to listen or wait for the nurse or doctor. Staying calm also keeps your blood pressure and stress level low, something all CNAs need for better health. If you’re having trouble, take a short break and walk around the facility. You can also practice deep breathing exercises to quickly destress.

4. Taking Time for You

CNAWorking with sick and injured individuals every day takes a toll on your mental and emotional health, no matter how calm, flexible, and empathetic you are. Taking time for you, whether it’s eating healthy meals, exercising, spending time with friends and family, watching favorite shows, or doing anything else in the “me time” category helps you refresh and recharge. You’ll return to work feeling ready to take on the day when you make time for yourself.
