Whether you’ve been around water wells your whole life or just had water well drilling done on a new property, you need to keep your drinking, bathing, and cleaning supply properly maintained. It’s crucial to ensure the property always has access to water, and it also protects from illnesses that result from contamination. Following these simple do’s and don’ts will help you avoid costly well repairs down the road.

Do:

Keep the surroundings clear.

Never store any harmful contaminants in the area immediately surrounding the water well. These include fertilizers, metal items, and pesticides, which can all cause harmful materials to seep into the well’s water. You also should never build any new structures or install septic or irrigation systems in close proximity to the water well. There also shouldn’t be any major landscaping installations near it.

Test the water.

Every year, have the water quality of the well tested to ensure it is free of common contaminants. These include minerals such as calcium, sodium, and magnesium, as well as more dangerous elements like arsenic, lead, and radon. Along with the test, chlorinate the water at least once annually to improve the overall quality.

Don’t:

Leave the old well uncovered.

Water WellsMost wells typically have a serviceable life of around twenty years. No matter how often you have water well maintenance, eventually, it will become obsolete. Anytime you have new well drilling services, always have the drilling contractor seal off the old one. Open wells are safety hazards for any people or animals roaming the property.

Back-siphon the well.

When mixing chemicals like fertilizers or pesticides, never put the hose directly into the tank or container. This can create negative pressure that causes the hazardous materials to travel back through the hose directly into the well water.
