One of the most convenient appliances in any kitchen, microwaves last about nine years before they need replacing. However, if they’re broken or old, they can be dangerous and may cause house fires. Below, are some warning signs indicating that it’s time to replace your microwave.

How to Tell If You Need a New Microwave

1. Slow Heating

When this appliance is near the end of its life, it often does not heat or reheat food quickly. Since microwaves are designed to “nuke” food in minutes, this is a surefire sign of a problem. You may notice it takes three tries to reheat your leftovers instead of one, or that the unit no longer heats food at all. The best test is to put an eight-ounce mug of water in the microwave for two minutes. If it is not steaming upon completion, replace the appliance.

2. Sparks, Burning Odors & Smoke

appliancesAny burning odors, sparks, or smoke coming from your microwave shouldn’t be ignored. Turn the appliance off immediately and wait for the fire to die before opening the door, if applicable. Unless you accidentally placed non-microwavable items, such as silverware or aluminum foil, in the appliance, it needs to be replaced as soon as possible.

3. Loud or Odd Noises

Microwaves make low humming sounds when they are operating correctly. Any grinding, rattling, or buzzing noises tells you something is wrong, such as a piece of food lodged under the turntable. If a food-related clog is not the problem, you could have a high-voltage capacitor or power diode issue requiring professional attention.

4. Keypad or Door Issues

After years of use, your microwave’s keypad may stop working efficiently, or the door may no longer close. Instead of pushing the buttons innumerable times or holding the door shut while your food heats, replace the appliance. This is especially important if it is hitting the 10-year mark.
