Overpacking for travel is a common but avoidable problem. Packing light saves time, hassle, and money, since you won’t have to check your baggage or pay overweight luggage fees. Use the tips below to prepare for your next trip.

A Weekend Trip Packing Guide

1. Plan Your Outfits

Make a list of what you’ll wear for each day and occasion of your trip. Consider factors like your destination’s climate, your itinerary, and the purpose of your travels. If you’re in town on business, for example, you’ll need professional attire in addition to a comfortable travel outfit. If you’re planning to relax by the hotel pool and order room service on a well-deserved break, on the other hand, you can leave your fancy wardrobe at home. Bring a pair of socks and underwear for each day you’ll be gone. If you’re worried you won’t have enough clothing, keep in mind that you can always send clothes to a laundry service while you’re away.

2. Buy Travel Size Geartravel

The TSA has limits on the quantities of liquids you can carry on board. Even if you’re not flying, however, you don’t need full size toiletries for a short trip. Many hotels provide small complimentary soap, shampoo, and conditioner bottles for guests. Buy a travel size toothbrush, comb, deodorant, and even accessories like compact umbrellas. Don’t worry too much if you forget an item; if you’re visiting a metropolitan area, it should be relatively easy to find a convenience store nearby.

3. Use a Small Bag or Backpack

In most cases, if you’ll only be gone a few days, you don’t need to bring a giant duffel or a full suitcase. A roomy backpack or over-the-shoulder bag should be enough to fit what you need and will be easier to carry. Limiting the amount of space you have to work with will limit the temptation to bring unnecessary items. What’s more, if the container meets your airline’s carry-on requirements, you won’t have to check it, so you can spend more time enjoying your travel and less time waiting at the carousel to retrieve your baggage.

4. Maximize Space

Many people find that rolling their clothing into tight cylinders leaves more space than traditional folding. Stuff items into unexploited areas. For instance, you can place extra pairs of socks into the spare pair of shoes you’re bringing. For unsurpassed organization, try packing cubes to sort your belongings by category or activity. You could use one for all your swimwear and place your work gear in another. While they don’t technically make your luggage lighter, packing cubes are a major space saver.
