People flock to Southern California for the sunny climate and gorgeous landscapes. However, the one drawback may be the pests. Several different household pests, such as termites and spiders, love the dry, warm weather. If left unchecked, many of them will cause significant property damage.

A Guide to Common Southern California Pests

1. Ants

Carpenter ants, like termites, will burrow through wood. They are easily recognizable because of their large size and black color. Pharaoh ants are also large; however, they are light brown or yellowish in color. They will chew on almost anything, and they thrive in the desert conditions of Southern California. To get rid of them, you’ll need to call pest control.

2. Termites

termiteSouthern California is home to three different termite species, but the most common is the Drywood Termite. These insects will infest any kind of dead wood, creating nests inside the frame. Staying ahead of termite control is especially important in wood-framed houses. An inspection can identify any past infestations and potential future problems, and stop a colony from growing before it’s too late.

3. Roaches

There are six types of roaches that are found in the area, but the most common one is the German cockroach. These small, brown pests are what most people think of when they think of roaches. They are found most often in kitchens or places with food and water. There are plenty of home recommendations for how to kill roaches, but most often homeowners need to call a pest control technician to eradicate the issue.

4. Spiders

Spiders are also a fan of Southern California’s dry climate, especially the Black Widow spider. These infamous spiders are sometimes found inside homes but are usually more commonly found in backyards and garages. They are extremely venomous, though not fatal. However, just a few of them can make a backyard dangerous for pets or small children.
