Originating in Japan, the martial art of karate was introduced to the American mainstream following World War II and has since been a popular practice in the States. Whether you’re a parent with kids interested in taking a class or you’re looking to learn martial arts yourself, the guide below will give you an overview of karate classes and its expectations.

FAQ About Karate Classes

What is karate?

The word karate translates to “empty hand” in Japanese—“kara” is the Japanese word for empty, and “te” is the word for hand. Karate is a method of self-defense that focuses on the use of hands as opposed to physical weapons.

Where is it done?

The art of karate is done at a dojo, a formal gathering place for students of martial arts. The word dojo translates to “place of the way” in Japanese. While the word typically describes martial arts, it is also used in reference to meditation.

What are the belt levels?

Karate ClassesAs a karate student advances in skill level, they change the color of the belt they wear. The levels are ranked in order of beginner to expert as follows: white, yellow, orange, green, blue, purple, brown, red, and black. The darker the belt, the more advanced the student. The colors represent the stages of a growing plant, mirroring the circle of life—even though the black belt is the last to achieve, it’s not the end of your martial arts journey. There is always something new to learn and grow as a person.

So how long does it take to level up? That depends. Beginners often change belts every few months, while more experienced students often take a year or more to advance.

Are there restrictions on age or athletic ability?

Karate classes are not restricted to individuals of any specific age or fitness level. Karate, and martial arts training in general, is beneficial to all ages, and students are encouraged to move at their own pace. No matter where a student starts, they will quickly improve their flexibility, strength, and level of physical fitness by taking karate classes. Students will also learn discipline, as they must follow their instructor closely and practice daily if they want to advance in their skill level—a lesson that will translate in school, the workforce, and beyond.
