Crowding, tipped teeth, or bite misalignments are orthodontic issues. Many of these are caused by palates that are too deep or too narrow. To correct this, a family dentist may use a palate expander. If you’ve never heard of this oral appliance, understanding what it does can help you decide whether it’s right for you. Here’s more information about this tool to keep you informed in case your dentist presents you with this option.

What Are Palate Expanders?

Unlike braces or aligners, which pull or push teeth into alignment, a palate expander is designed to change the shape of the roof of the mouth. Worn like a retainer, it contains two sides held together by a mechanical device that opens to widen the area and move teeth naturally. By using a small key, your family dentist can widen the device routinely to gradually create more space for teeth.

Palate expanders are most effective for young patients, since kids under the age of 16 don’t have a developed palate yet. However, they can be used by adults to improve orthodontic results.

How Can They Benefit Your Smile? family dentist

Palate expanders resolve crossbites, crowding, impacted teeth, and many other issues. As the narrow palate is gently opened, the teeth can move into position. If they don’t shift with regular use, family dentists can then move them with braces. Palate expanders also widen your smile, creating a more aesthetically pleasing view of your pearly whites.
