If you don’t act fast when something spills on the floor, you could end up with permanently damaged carpets. Thankfully, there are ways to get out even the darkest stains, so your flooring isn’t marred forever. Here are a few strategies for removing some of the most common spills.

3 Liquids That Stain Carpets

1. Wine or Juice

Wine is possible to remove if you spot it while it’s still wet. As soon as you notice a spill, blot it with a dry towel; make sure to do so gently to avoid rubbing it deeper into the carpet fibers. Then, pour table salt on it until it’s all covered and let it sit. The next day, you can vacuum up the salt and see if it lifted the mark. If some portion of the stain remains, you can try soaking it with a vinegar and water solution; however, it may be necessary to patch the area if the stain is especially stubborn.

2. Pet Urine

If you happen to catch your furry friend in the act, it may be possible to blot most of the urine and then apply a special carpet cleaner formulated for pet stains. Once the liquid has dried, though, call in a professional for stain removal, so you’re not left with pungent, damaged carpets.

3. Mud

If your kids or pets track in mud, let it dry first. Then, vacuum over the area to clean up any loose particles. When only the stain remains, dab it with a mixture of gentle dish soap and water. Blot the area dry, and repeat until you can no longer see the stain.
