Whether you’re moving or downsizing, a storage unit is an ideal solution to keep your belongings safe and out of the way. But before you put items into your unit, you’ll want to ensure they’re properly packed so they’re ready to use when you need them. This is particularly important with items such as bedding, which can accumulate unpleasant allergens and odors if not stored correctly. Use these tips to keep your linens, blankets, and quilts fresh.

4 Ways to Keep Bedding Fresh in a Storage Unit

1. Wash Before Storing

You should always clean items before putting them in storage. Wash duvet covers, blankets, and sheets at least once a month to keep them in prime condition while in storage. With the duvet cover, unsnap it gently to prevent snags, and turn it inside out to prevent fading. Snap the closures shut before washing to prevent them from catching. Wash with a mild detergent in cold water and dry on low heat or air dry.

2. Insert Scent Packets

In addition to washing beforehand, keep things smelling fresh by inserting scent packets between the folds. The easiest option is dryer sheets. You can also pack dried lavender into a tied cotton sachet. Additionally, cedar sachets or balls will also work, or you can use or a box of baking soda with holes cut in the top, though you’ll need to keep it upright in the box to avoid spillage.

3. Pack Properly

Pack the bedding right after drying it. Fold it into a storage bag to prevent allergens and odors. Put the bag in a cool, dry location, so there’s little risk of moisture damage. Avoid plastic bags as these can trap moisture inside and cause mold and mildew growth. A breathable cotton bag is best.
