The paving on your driveway has a limited lifespan. While regular surface sealing and crack repair can keep it in good shape for years, it will eventually wear out and need replacement. Here are a few signs repaving your driveway is a better investment than another round of repairs.

How to Tell If You Should Repave Your Driveway

1. Extensive Cracks

DrivewaysSometimes called "alligator cracking," this pattern is when the driveway has so many interconnecting cracks, it begins to look like scales. This is a sign the pavement is deteriorating across the entire surface—not just under particular pressure in one area.

2. Sunken Pavement

Over time, soil can erode from beneath your driveway, leading to potholes and areas that dip down. You may also wear divots in your driveway over time with use. Both of these types of sunken areas can lead to cracking and pooling water.

3. Crumbling Edges

The edge of your driveway can be under particular pressure if you drive off the edge, and can also be subject to more erosion since it's easier for water to infiltrate under the pavement surface. Some cracking is inevitable, but when chunks start coming off the edge of the pavement, it can narrow your driveway and also make it look poorly maintained.

4. Age

Depending on how well you care for your driveway, it can last anywhere from 10 to 20 years. Once you pass the 10-year mark, pay close attention for signs of deterioration. Repave crumbling portions to prevent further cracking and preserve the driveway for at least another 10 years.
