A dead car battery is one of the most frustrating issues a driver can experience. It’s also one of the most common. You should have a routine battery test every year or so, along with a tire check, oil change, or other regular maintenance, to ensure the battery is in working order. However, even one in newer condition can be drained by one of these four factors.

4 Causes of a Drained Car Battery

1. Leaving the Lights On

Leaving the lights on while you’re parked is one of the most common reasons for battery drainage. Most drivers will make this mistake at least once. Headlights are the biggest culprit, although dome lights, door lights, and trunk lights can also drain the battery.

2. Temperature Fluctuations

batterytestBatteries are sensitive to temperature fluctuations. When it’s hotter than 100 degrees or lower than 10 degrees Fahrenheit, sulfate crystals can build up on the battery. If the car is left in these conditions for an extended period, the build-up can cause damage. The battery will also take longer to charge and maintain power in extreme temperatures.

3. Alternator Trouble

The alternator is needed to recharge the battery. If it’s malfunctioning, it can’t provide the necessary power. Most often, a bad diode is the issue and will prevent the car from starting. An auto repair technician should perform a battery test and inspect the alternator. If the alternator is malfunctioning, it may need to be replaced.

4. Corroded Parts

Corroded or dirty connections can impede battery charging. Loose components and cables can cause issues as well. Visually inspect the battery to see if there is grime or loose connections. Having an auto technician address these issues should allow the battery to charge correctly. Keeping these components in decent condition will also extend battery life.
