If your local bar hosts karaoke nights, getting up in front of the mic can be exhilarating. If you're nervous, however, it can be difficult to have a good time. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to get better at karaoke, so you'll feel more at home on stage.

How to Enjoy Karaoke Night

1. Pick Songs Strategically

There are a lot of selections on the song list that aren't necessarily ideal for karaoke. Think through the whole song; do you remember all the lyrics? Are there long instrumentals, spoken word segments, or vocalizations you can't match? These can make it a tedious song to sing or listen to during karaoke.

2. Know Your Range

No one wants to miss a high note. Make sure the songs you choose are within your range. If you can reach both the highest and lowest notes while singing the song in its original key, it’s a perfect choice.

3. Know the Audience

BarThe best songs for karaoke are familiar enough to sing along to but not overplayed, so your audience will still enjoy it. Pay attention to what other people in the bar are singing, the styles that get the best reactions, and whether you've heard any song more than once before you choose.

4. Breathe

One of the most fundamental skills in singing is controlling your breathing. Take deep breaths from your belly, not the chest and shoulders, and time your breaths for pauses between lines.

5. Be Energetic

Your audience is going to respond just as much to your energy as to your vocal talent; in fact, even terrible singers can win over the crowd by making their performance fun and funny. Move around, use animated facial expressions, and put feeling into your singing.
