It’s no secret that moving can be stressful; however, a little organization can make it easier. Packing up your clothing neatly can streamline unpacking, so it’s worth the time and effort investment. Below are a few tips for easy clothing organization.

4 Tips for Packing Clothing for a Move

1. Clean Out Your Wardrobe First

Before you begin packing, go through your wardrobe and pull out anything you haven’t worn in over a year. Unless it has sentimental attachments, such as your grandmother’s pearls or your dad’s sweater, donate it. Streamlining your closet will leave you with fewer items to pack, which will save you time while moving.

2. Group Seasonal Clothing Together

Whether it’s sweaters and boots or tank tops and shorts, it will help you stay organized to group like items together. This way, if you find that you don’t have enough room for clothing in your new place, you can easily take the off-season clothing to off-site storage until you need them.

3. Utilize Suitcases & Drawers

movingBecause you’ll be moving them anyway, it makes it sense to pack clothing in suitcases and drawers. Organize T-shirts or clothing that you’ll keep in the drawers upon arrival, so you can easily slide them back into the dresser. Any stacked, folded clothing can be stowed in suitcases to ease transport.

4. Keep Clothes on the Hangers

Instead of taking the time to remove every item from the hangers, keep them on; it will be easier to unpack upon arrival. Carefully remove a few hangers of clothing at a time, and place them in a garment box. If you don’t have a box, tear a hole in the bottom of a trash bag and loop the hole over the hook of the hanger. Pull the plastic down over the clothing to protect the items from the elements.
