Summer is an ideal time to schedule a heating and cooling system inspection and to perform routine maintenance. HVAC service technicians can diagnose any issues that arise from normal wear and tear to ensure your home remains comfortable during the hot summer months. Check out the following list for HVAC maintenance tips.

5 Summer HVAC Service Tips

1. Change the Filters

HVAC serviceThe filters in an HVAC system work hard, filtering out dust, dander, and allergens. When they are clogged, it can slow the entire system down and compromise indoor air quality. Change filters every three months if you have pets and every two months if there are smokers in your home.

2. Clean Ducts

If you have a system that uses ductwork, make sure that a technician cleans it thoroughly. Mold and dust can collect in the ducts, making those with allergies or asthma more prone to developing symptoms. Dirty ducts also counteract the efficiency of HEPA filters. Cleaning ducts is an annual maintenance task that is best done between high use seasons, including the summer.

3. Inspect the AC Unit

If you have an exterior compressor for the air conditioner, check to make sure the unit is clear of leaves, pine needles, twigs, and other debris. Clear away excess dirt and dust, and remove any plants that have grown within 2 feet of the unit. The compressor needs to be clean to pull in the air that the system uses. Additionally, inspect wall AC units for broken components and dirty filters.

4. Upgrade to a Programmable Thermostat

A new thermostat will enable you to set a steady temperature and keep the entire home comfortable. Smart systems can be integrated into a smartphone and controlled anywhere there is a Wi-Fi connection. Program temperatures to coincide with leaving and coming home from work, as well as bedtime and waking up in the morning.

5. Schedule a Professional Tune-up

It’s wise to schedule a tune-up for your system at least once a year. An HVAC services expert will test the efficiency and functionality of all parts of the system and let you know if any repairs are needed. Regular tune-ups help prevent more costly repairs and can extend the life of the equipment.
