It's no secret that airplane seats are not exactly designed for comfort, and that often means the body is forced into uncomfortable and unsupported positions. On a short trip, it may not be an issue, but for a long-haul flight, airplane seats can produce significant neck and back pain. Below are some do’s and don'ts for managing this common type of travel-related discomfort.

Do:

Bring neck and back support pillows.

neck and back painThere are several pillows that fit easily into carryon luggage and reduce or eliminate neck and back pain. A U-shaped neck pillow provides sufficient support for the head and neck, keeping the uppermost part of the spine upright and well-cushioned. A lumbar support pillow is ideal for the lower back; these slide between the small of the back and the seatback, helping the lumbar spine stay erect with neither too much tension nor too much slack.

Maintain good posture.

Healthy airplane posture involves sitting as far back in the seat as you can, with as little room as possible between the hips and the seatback. This ensures proper support for the back and neck. If you didn't bring along a pillow, roll up a sweatshirt or blanket and place it between the lower back and back of the seat.

Don't:

Stay in one position.

Aim to get up from your seat and move around at least once an hour. This stimulates blood flow, increases the range of motion in tense muscles, and helps prevent more serious issues, like deep vein thrombosis. Remember to only move around when it is safe to do so and never during takeoff or landing or when the seatbelt sign is illuminated.

Forget pain management aids.

If you're prone to neck and back pain when traveling, bring along any pain management tools that will make the journey easier. Heat wraps can alleviate tight muscles; if the pain is acute, you could request an icepack from a flight attendant to numb some of the discomfort. Also, pack pain medications, whether over-the-counter or prescription, in your carryon for quick access.
