Buying a boat will mean more fun on hot summer days. However, to stay safe on the water, it’s crucial to maintain your watercraft, including heading to a boat repair specialist if you ever run into any issues. Here are a few common ones to look for.

How to Tell If You Should Head to a Boat Repair Specialist

1. The Engine Often Overheats

Most power boats use a water-cooling system. If it fails, it can cause the engine to overheat. The problem may be debris, such as grass or weeds, caught in the system; fortunately, it’s easy to remove it on your own. However, overheating can also mean you have a broken drive belt, broken blades on the impeller (which circulates the raw water in the cooling system), or corroded parts in the exhaust system. Overheating will destroy the engine and leave you stranded, so have this fixed right away.

2. Steering Problems

Low hydraulic fluid may be a culprit, and you can fill it according to the engine model instructions. But if this doesn’t fix the problem, the steering cables may be broken, or there may be hydraulic fluid leaks in the steering system.

3. Inconsistent Power or Loss of Power

If the vessel has inconsistent power, doesn’t respond to an increase in the throttle, or loses power altogether, you may need repairs. If you aren’t low on fuel, the fuel may be dirty or old, or there may be water or condensation in the fuel tank. There may be an electrical issue or mechanical failure within the engine, or bad spark plugs. Additionally, the filters may need to be replaced.

4. The Boat Won’t Start

This is one of the most dreaded and potentially complicated issues boat owners face. If it fails to start, it may be due to a variety of issues, such as:

  • No fuel or low fuel
  • Issues in the fuel line or filters
  • Dead battery
  • Bad switch
  • Dirty or corroded ignition parts
  • Issues with the rotor

Because there are so many potential culprits, have a professional take a look.
