If you have a gas stove, you are probably already familiar with the clicking noise that happens when you turn the burner knob. Typically, the electric igniter will click a few times before successfully lighting your burner. Sometimes, however, the igniter will keep clicking after the burner is lit or not light at all. Calling a stove repair professional may be necessary, but try these simple troubleshooting tips first.

3 Steps to Take When the Igniter on Your Gas Stove Keeps Clicking

1. Ensure Everything Is in Place

One common reason for a clicking burner is the cap being out of alignment. On a completely cool stovetop, remove the burner grate. Underneath the grate is the burner cap, which you can remove and recenter. If the cap is broken, it might need to be replaced entirely.

2. Clean the Burner

However, don’t ever use anything made of paper or wood, like a toothpick. These can break off and get stuck in the burner, creating a potential fire hazard, which may require calling a stove repair professional.

3. Dry It Out

You might have accidentally had a pot boil over the side and onto the burner. However, excess moisture can prevent the burner from lighting. On a cool stovetop, remove the burner grate and cap to air-dry them or gently towel them off. You can also turn the range fan on or set the oven at a low temperature to help speed up the drying process.
