Father’s Day is a holiday to recognize dads and their role in families and society. Like Mother’s Day, which became an official holiday in 1908, it usually involves treating fathers to a special day complete with activities, cards, gifts, and flowers. However, this wasn’t always the case. Here’s a brief history of the holiday and guide to buying dad the perfect flowers.

A History of Father’s Day

Father’s Day in the U.S. is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. However, it’s not solely an American tradition and different countries around the world, including Russia and Thailand, observe it on different days. The first Father’s Day was celebrated in Fairmont, West Virginia, on July 5, 1908, a memorial for the deaths of 361 men in a mine explosion.

flowersOn June 5, 1910, Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Washington, held a similar Father’s Day celebration in honor of her single widower father, a Civil War veteran, and the sacrifices he made for his family. However, it was years before the holiday was officially recognized. Although in 1924 President Calvin Coolidge recommended it as a holiday, the idea was controversial and, in the 1930s, a movement was made to cancel Mother’s Day and have “Parent’s Day” instead. Mother’s Day continued, however, and Father’s Day was officially recognized in 1972.

Flowers to Give on Father’s Day

Giving flowers is a tradition that spans the globe. From birthdays and naming days to religious celebrations, marriages, and funerals, people give them to express respect, love, and appreciation. Father’s Day is no different. Depending on your dad’s taste, you may send any flowers or floral arrangement that suits him. Some popular choices are orange and red options, as these shades are sometimes considered more masculine.

Red roses are appropriate for any occasion, as they symbolize love, honor, and respect. Orange or yellow options, including roses, lilies, and daisies, express enthusiasm and excitement. You can also send dad a foliage bouquet of different shades of green, or a live plant he can put in his garden or office.
