One of the most common reasons for going to see a foot specialist is if you have a hammertoe. This condition generally affects one or more of the middle three toes on either foot. It can be corrected if addressed early, so seek treatment as soon as you see these signs.

Defining the Condition

A hammertoe is a deformity that occurs when the middle joint of the toe bends in an unnatural position. This makes the toe look like a hook or a hammer, hence the name. It can sometimes cause foot pain, mostly due to shoes rubbing the top of the toe. When the abnormality first forms, it’s still flexible, but over time the condition becomes permanent.

Causes of HammertoesHammertoes

The toe bends because of an imbalance in the muscles and tendons of the foot, pulling on the joint. This often occurs because of poorly fitting shoes, particularly ones that narrow toward the toe and force the toe to bend. The more often these shoes are worn, the more the muscles and tendons shift to accommodate the position and the more calluses form to fit the shoe shape.

Hammertoe Treatment

The first step is to get comfortable, roomy shoes one-half inch longer than your longest toe. These should be flats — not high heels — that can encourage the foot to slide forward in the shoe. They should be wide enough to fit your foot comfortably. Also, ask your doctor to demonstrate exercises to stretch out your toe. Finally, you can wear straps and cushions to help train the toe so it no longer curls.
