Your lawn has probably seen fantastic growth this spring, and your summer goal should be to keep it lush through the high heat. When you take proper care of the grass, it will stay green and thick all season long. Follow the lawn care tips below to keep it in beautiful shape.

Your Guide to Summer Lawn Care

1. Fertilizing

Fertilize the lawn at the beginning of the summer. Use a balanced garden fertilizer of 12/12/12 or 10/10/10. These numbers make up the NPK ratio, which describes the amount of nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium in the batch. During summer, the lawn needs an even mixture of all three nutrients. Do not fertilize again during high heat since this can burn the grass.

2. Wateringfertilizers

With spring rains behind, it’s up to you to keep the lawn watered. It needs at least one inch per week, with an extra half or full inch during the extreme heat weeks. Water early in the day — around 5 or 6 a.m. — to prevent fungal growth and avoid wasting water through evaporation. Schedule the sprinkler system for deep watering over one or two days each week, rather than a little each day.

3. Mowing

Keep the grass blades longer during the summer, which will help deepen roots. Taller grass also provides shade for the root system, keeping it from drying out in the heat. Set your mower setting about three inches high. Mulch grass clippings and distribute them back on the grass to keep the lawn moist.
