Roofs are long-lasting—with some materials, like metal, capable of staying strong for 50 to 100 years. And yet, at some point, they all need to be replaced. If it’s that time for your house, but you haven’t gone through the process before, the guide below offers advice on what steps to take before the roofers come.

How to Get Ready for the Roofers’ Arrival

1. Talk to Neighbors

Even though the roofers will be on your property, extend your neighbors the courtesy of telling them about the work. Depending on how close your homes are, there is a chance that your roof replacement may lead to debris or noise drifting over to them. This way, they can take precautions when they park or cover or move their outdoor furniture.

2. Remove Outside Items

Similarly, you should make sure all your patio furniture, outdoor cooking gear, and kids’ toys are away from the work zone. Even though roofers will be careful, there is always a chance that materials and hardware may fall as they work, which can damage your items.

3. Take Down Wall Decor

To prevent anything from falling and breaking, remove art and photos from walls and place fragile items on shelves somewhere safe until the work is complete. You might also want to turn off your security alarm, which might go off due to these movements.

4. Protect Attic Belongings

Because your attic is directly under the work area, there is a chance that dust and debris can end up on anything in this space. Remove fragile or sentimental items and cover large pieces with a tarp or cloth.

5. Find Outside Outlets

Your roofers will need access to power as they work. Before they arrive, locate all outdoor outlets so you can show the crew where they can plug in. If there is a limitation, they will need to make a plan for completing the work.
