After several deer and elk with Chronic Wasting Disease were discovered near Baxter County, the Arkansas Fish and Game Commission (AFGC) decided to expand the existing Management Zones. To help slow the spread of this highly contagious disease that affects deer and elk, hunters throughout the CWD Management Zones should be aware of new rules and changes to existing regulations.

How CWD Management Zones Affect You

What Is Chronic Wasting Disease?

Chronic Wasting Disease, or CWD, is a highly contagious neurological illness that affects elk, white-tailed deer, and mule deer. Thought to be caused by an abnormal protein, CWD is similar to Mad Cow Disease, resulting in abnormal behavior, emaciation, loss of bodily function, and eventually death.

Unlawful to Feed Wildlife

feed storesUnder the new Management Zone regulations, feeding wildlife is prohibited. Providing food in deer feeders or piled on the ground causes animals to gather in unnaturally high concentrations, increasing the chances of transmitting the disease.

Exceptions to the Prohibition

Under the new guidelines, hunters may still feed deer and elk on private land between September 1st and December 31st. Planted food plots may be grown year-round, and baiting bears on private land is permissible within 30 days of the hunting season, although no wildlife products may be used.

  • Incidental feeding of wildlife from active livestock operations is allowed.
  • Normal agricultural, gardening or soil stabilization practices are allowed.
  • Attracting or feeding birds and squirrels with common bird and squirrel feeders, bird baths and grain completely submerged in water is allowed.
