Most people are aware that exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays causes sunburns and skin cancer, but many don’t realize that it can also have a long-lasting effect on vision. Being in direct sunlight without proper protection, even for a short period of time, can result in serious and irreversible eye health problems. As such, make eye care a priority by following the tips outlined below.

Do:

Wear the right sunglasses.

Sunglasses can help prevent harmful UV rays from reaching your eyes. They should be worn whenever you go outside. When shopping for a pair, make sure they are labeled 99-100% UV-absorbent. Bigger frames and wrap-around styles offer more protection, as they block peripheral rays, as well. Polarized lenses are preferable for blocking out the most glare.

Consider UV blocking contacts.

If you wear contacts, ask for a brand that has UV-blocking ingredients. This will provide an added layer of protection for your eyes. Contacts that fall into the Class I category offer the greatest defense against sunlight. These should still be worn with sunglasses to ensure effective eye care.

Don’t:

Look directly into the sun.

eye careMake sure to never look directly at the sun, especially during an eclipse. Doing so can burn holes in the eye’s retina, which is necessary for central vision. The result is a condition called solar retinopathy, and although rare, this type of damage is permanent.

Overlook eye care when you’re in the car or it’s cloudy.

The sun’s rays are able to pass right through car windows, haze, and clouds. This means your eyes can be exposed to UV rays any time you’re outdoors, even while driving and regardless of the weather conditions or season. Damage can also occur due to reflections off water, snow, and the pavement—so be cautious year-round.
