If your window treatments are blinds, you know they collect dust, so cleaning them is a must. Whether they are vertical, fabric, or wood blinds, proper care prolongs their life. Here’s how to keep your special window coverings looking good for a long time.

5 Steps to Cleaning Your Blinds

1. Gather Cleaning Items

To clean the window treatments, you need a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment and microfiber cloths or a duster. If you don’t have a microfiber duster or cloth, a clean polyester or acrylic sock works well.

blinds2. Adjust the Blinds

Lower your window treatments completely. For aluminum and vinyl blinds, make sure the slats are not closed tight, but tilt them downward. It’s fine to close faux-wood or wood blinds completely because they generally don’t overlap. This allows dirt and dust to fall to the floor as you clean, which you can then sweep up when you’re done.

3. Vacuum

Using a low-suction setting on your vacuum, start at the top with your brush attachment and vacuum your horizontal blinds across the slats. Work your way down to catch any falling dust. Vacuum vertical blinds with a downward motion, not up and down, so you don’t unhook slats accidentally.

4. Dust

Starting at the top, use your duster, cloth, or sock to wipe across the slats. Wipe again with a dryer sheet to attract stray dust particles. Repeat this process all the way down the window treatment.

 5. Reverse & Repeat

Turn the blinds to the opposite side and repeat the whole process. When you’re finished, wipe the window sills and vacuum the floor or carpet to gather any fallen dust.
