Unless you work from home or have a pet-friendly office, chances are your animals spend at least a few hours a day at home alone. During this time, they may become restless and get into trouble if they get too bored. While boarding and day care are excellent options, you may prefer to keep your pet in a familiar environment. In this case, here’s how to keep them occupied when you’re not home.

Tips for Keeping Pets Entertained While You Work

1. Keep the TV On

Leaving the TV on while you’re away diverts your pet’s attention from boredom or distractions. If your pet actively watches other animals on certain channels or movies, play them while you’re gone. As a bonus, the sound covers noises that could otherwise cause anxiety, such as neighbors or thunder. Music achieves the same result.

2. Consider a Camera

Many pet owners choose boarding because it ensures their pet is safe while they’re at work. Install a pet camera for dog or cat surveillance without human intervention. Some options exist to let you interact with your pet from a distance, such as audio streams and treat dispensers.

3. Provide a View Outsideboarding

Dogs and cats alike are curious about the outside world. Provide safe access to a window where they can watch birds, squirrels, passersby, and other outdoor life. Set a chair by the window and open the curtains so they can see out and stay entertained.

4. Have Chew Toys on Hand

It’s an instinct for your dog to chew, so leave them with plenty of toys in your absence. This will keep them from tearing up furniture and shoes. Consider an alternative to rawhide, as the material could create intestinal issues. Instead, try chews from Nylabone® or Kong®.

5. Hire a Dog Walker

If day care or boarding aren’t viable options right now, ensure your dog gets plenty of physical activity by enlisting the help of a local dog walker. While you’re away at work, they’ll come and take your pet outside for playtime. There are even apps available to track daily walks.
