Invisalign® is a cosmetic dentistry solution used to help patients discreetly achieve straighter smiles. It works by gradually shifting teeth into place with custom clear aligner trays, also known as retainers. While you’ll only have each tray for a couple of weeks before moving on to the next set, you’ll need to keep them clean to prevent bacteria buildup. To help you care for your oral device, here are some simple ways to keep it fresh.

3 Tips for Maintaining Clean Invisalign® Trays

1. Rinse & Brush Nightly

Before using your retainer, gently scrub it with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a small amount of toothpaste to remove bacteria. Rinse it using lukewarm water to wash any residue. This will remove saliva particles to keep your breath fresh and your tray clean and ready for use.

2. Store Them

To protect your trays against any germs or damage, store them in a case any time they’re not in use. While you’re recommended to wear the aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day for the best results, you’ll need to take them out to eat. During this time, keep your device in a protective, hard-shell case. This will also help you remember you have your retainer with you, ensuring you don’t misplace it.

3. Use the Cleaning System

Calcium can accumulate on the trays, taking on a white, cloudy appearance over time. Invisalign offers a special cleaning system that uses crystals to remove buildup in just 15 minutes. If you notice your trays becoming cloudy, consider purchasing this accessory to help you keep your retainers hygienic and your breath fresh.
