You’ve spent weeks organizing and packing, and now moving day is finally here. But your work isn’t done. While your movers do the heavy lifting, you have a role to play in making the process easier for them. Here’s a quick list of etiquette do’s and don’ts to help you.

Do:

Give your neighbors a heads-up.

Whether you live in an apartment complex or a house, be mindful of your neighbors when you move. Let them know about moving day ahead of time so they’ll be prepared for the likely commotion it will cause. Consider your neighbor’s schedules when choosing a time. Some apartment buildings only allow you to move on certain days during specific hours. Also, consider how the operation might affect them. Will the moving truck block their driveway, or does padding need to be put up in the elevator? Do what you can to avoid creating unnecessary inconveniences.

Have everything packed and labeled before your movers arrive.

Hawaii movingWhen you properly prepare for moving day, the process is much more likely to go smoothly. Pack up all boxes before your movers arrive and carefully label them with special instructions like “fragile” or “this side up.” Also, pack each box with a regular person’s strength in mind. Your movers will be able to do their job faster if you avoid overpacking boxes with heavy items like books, tools, and appliances.

Don’t:

Bail on your movers once they arrive.

Your job is not over when the movers arrive. You still need to be in the house if they have questions or concerns. It’s also a good idea to offer them water and snacks and show them the bathroom. They’ll do a better job if they’re comfortable. If you do need to run out quickly, let them know when you’ll be back and how they can reach you if needed.

Forget to tip.

If you were satisfied with the job your moving team did, give them an appropriate tip, keeping in mind factors like the number of hours they worked, the stairs they had to climb, and how heavy the boxes were. A good rule of thumb is to calculate 10 to 15% of the move’s total cost and split that among your workers.
