Trees decorating your yard not only add to the natural aesthetic, but also shade you and your family from the sun while you relax outside. This summer, return the favor by exercising the proper tree care to keep your landscape healthy and beautiful all season.

How to Implement Tree Care in the Summer

1. Deep Watering

During the dry summer months, it’s especially important for trees to receive deep watering two to three times a week. Set the sprinkler up beneath the tree’s foliage, otherwise known as the drip zone, and slowly water that area so the surrounding soil can absorb the moisture into the roots. To use an accurate amount of water, place an empty can in the drip zone and shut off the sprinklers when it fills up to two inches.

2. Irrigation System Check

If you’re using a sprinkler system, summer is a good time to check for problems. Look for damaged or blocked sprinkler heads, which can divert or diminish the flow of water. Also, monitor for leaks to avoid wasting water and increasing your monthly bill.

3. Mulch

Mulch provides numerous benefits for your trees like retaining moisture, suppressing weeds, and keeping the soil cool. However, when laying mulch, don’t put it directly against the trunk. Instead, place a layer three to five inches deep to cover the drip line of the tree.

Tree Care4. Tree Trimming

While tree trimming typically takes place in the fall and winter, having a landscaping contractor perform this service in the summer is also beneficial. Pruning during the summer removes any dead or damaged branches and promotes healthy growth. Also, summer is the best time to trim trees that flower in the spring because it makes room for new buds to form and lets in more light to help them grow.

5. Pest Inspection

Common pests like the Pacific beetle cockroach, papaya mealybug, and the coconut rhinoceros beetle can harm or even kill your trees. Inspect your trees for missing bark, dead foliage, or discolored leaves. If you notice these symptoms, trim away the affected areas and apply a pesticide.
