As warm weather starts to roll in, it’s time to get your yard ready for summer. Performing lawn prep work will ensure that your property is in top shape during the hottest months of the year. Yard work doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Apart from tuning up your lawn mower, there are other ways to give your yard a little TLC.

How to Prep Your Yard for Summer

1. Water the Grass

To keep your lawn healthy, make sure it receives sufficient water. The general rule of thumb is to water the grass with at least one inch of water per square foot. Doing so ensures that water penetrates deeply and reaches the roots. Since hot weather can cause the water to evaporate quickly, practice deep watering. Instead of a light misting, this method allows more water to seep into the ground.

2. Check Your Lawn Mower

Mowing can strengthen the roots of the grass. Moreover, the cut grass provides the soil with recycled nitrogen and other nutrients. Make sure that your lawn mower works efficiently throughout the summer. Before using your mower and other outdoor gear, get them assessed. Have them tuned up or seek maintenance services as needed.

3. Remove Fallen Debris & Prune Dead Branches

Remove all dead foliage from your yard. When this accumulates, it blocks out sunlight and makes it difficult for new grass to grow. Ensure that the roots of the grass receive ample sunlight and water. If your lawn mower has a mulching feature, it can help clear out the yard. Also, check the trees and shrubs for dead branches and cut down any that you find. You should only prune still-living branches when trees are hibernating during the colder months. Pruning living branches during spring or summer will stress out the trees.

4. Mosquito-Proof the Yard

In most areas, mosquito season starts during the summer. To prevent an infestation, clear items from your yard that attract pests. Check for containers with stagnant water. Compost piles can also become breeding grounds for them. If you suspect that mosquitoes are laying eggs in your yard, consult a specialist. You can also use aerosol foggers to temporarily get rid of mosquitoes.
