A good mechanic can often tell you which auto repairs you need based on the sound your car is making since a number of different problems create distinct noises. Here's what you should listen for to tell you when it's time to go in for brake service, transmission repair, or other auto repairs.

Visit Your Auto Mechanic for These 5 Sounds

1. Squealing

A harsh squeal or screech when you brake means the pads are worn down and need replacement. On the other hand, a squeal from the engine area rather than the wheels can be due to a loose belt.

2. Roaring

Your car is naturally loud, but the muffler on the exhaust pipe keeps the sound down. If your car suddenly gets much louder whenever the engine is on, especially at the rear of the vehicle, the muffler is likely damaged.

Auto Repair3. Flapping

A repeated slapping sound can be the result of a belt falling apart or a fan blade hitting another component. If you hear it when you turn on the air conditioning, it's likely because of a loose ventilation flap.

4. Clunking

Timing is crucial in diagnosing this problem. If you hear a clunk or knock while shifting gears, your transmission may be damaged. If it happens while going over bumps, it may be due to a worn out suspension. If it happens while slowing down, the cause could be a damaged brake caliper.

5. Hissing

Hissing means escaping, evaporating fluid somewhere in your engine. Most often it’s engine coolant, which is accompanied by a sickly sweet smell. Otherwise, it could be fluid from another system, especially if your car is overheated.
