With summer just around the corner, it’s the time of year to take extra precautions to protect your child’s skin from the sun. Aside from sunburn, excess exposure to UV rays could lead to skin cancer later in life. Below are a few child care tips every parent should follow for sun safety.

How to Keep Your Kids Safe in the Sun

1. Plan for the Hottest Time of Day

The sun is strongest between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. every day; check the UV index in your area for a more pinpointed assessment. During this time, seek areas that provide ample shade coverage, such as a forested park or a covered jungle gym. If you’re going to the playground or for a walk, apply sunscreen and limit direct sun time to 30 minutes or less.

2. Dress Them in Hats & Sunglasseschild care

Whether you’re at the beach or going for a top-down drive, your children should always wear hats and sunglasses. Hats can prevent the scalp, face, ears, and neck from getting burnt by the sun’s UVA and UVB rays, while sunglasses with UV protection shield the eyes.

3. Apply Sunscreen

Sunscreen is a child care must during the summer season, even on overcast days. Always look for a sunscreen with an SPF above 30 for minimal protection. Aim for the highest possible SPF factor if your children have fair skin. Reapply every few hours.
