Designing a landscape in hot climates comes with obstacles. Plants that do well in humid or temperate regions might wilt and die in the extreme heat. Luckily, with a bit of research, it’s possible to find ones that will stay healthy in your Southwest yard. To start the search, consider the following heat-tolerant options.

Hot Weather Plants to Enhance Your Yard

1. Columbines

This perennial will fill your yard with pops of color in a variety of shades when the bell-shaped flowers bloom in late spring or early summer. For the vegetation to thrive, plant it in an area that receives full sunlight in the mornings and shade in the afternoons. Keep the soil drained and apply fertilizer to provide roots with extra nutrients. You should trim in late spring to promote new growth. However, since it can develop powdery mildew, cut back any infected branches to prevent the disease from spreading.

2. Sage

plantsHeat- and drought-tolerant, you can grow sage in the yard or let it sprout inside a container. You should prune the branches the first time temperatures drop down to the freezing point. The petals have a soft lavender hue and last from spring to early fall. Plant sage in an area that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight. Sage does best in soil that drains well and contains lime or shell.

3. Fall Aster

When fall aster blooms in autumn, the flowers resemble daisies. Long, purple, pointy petals surround a disc made of smaller yellow buds. Once you plant the perennials, limit your irrigation efforts, as they need little water to thrive. Although fall aster is tolerant to shade, make sure the section of the yard receives at least four hours of sunlight. Pruning in spring will help the vegetation remain lush and retain its dense form.
