Installing wood flooring in your home is a classic way to improve its appearance and raise its overall property value. Although the material requires a little more maintenance than some other flooring options, it’s a breeze to care for once you know the basics. Use the following do's and don'ts listed below to ensure your floors last for many decades to come.

Do:

Add foot pads to bottoms of furniture.

When heavy pieces of furniture are scooted along wood flooring, they can grind any present dirt into the planks. To avoid ending up with dents or scratches, place soft pads on the feet of your chairs and sofas so they can safely move across the floor without harming it. Felt, rubber, plastic adhesive, or slip-on pads are the most preferable. You can also have the pads nailed on, but be aware that they have to be applied very carefully or the nail could also cause damage.

Sweep and vacuum regularly.

Sweep daily with a dry, microfiber mop to effectively pick up the majority of the dirt. Avoid using a traditional broom on hardwood floors — they tend to just push the dirt around instead of picking it up, which could increase the risk of scrapes. Also, try to vacuum at least once a week to thoroughly remove all detritus that was missed with the mop.

Don't:

Soak the floor when mopping.

Wood flooring is susceptible to moisture and humidity. When too much is present in the air, or a liquid is spilled onto the material, it will absorb it and begin to expand. To avoid the boards from compressing and potentially cupping after mopping your hardwood, use a minimal amount of water.

Clean with vinegar.

Vinegar and water create an amazing cleaning solution for many areas of your home. However, keep this, and any other corrosive or acidic cleaners, away from your hardwood floors. The solution will eat away the finish over the material, and eventually, it will start to look dull and discolored.
