With summer almost here, having a properly functioning AC is more important than ever. Taking care of needed air conditioning repair in a timely manner will help your family stay comfortable no matter how hot it gets outside. Remember, a lack of cold air isn’t the only reason why you might need to schedule repairs. Here are three red flags.

3 Key Signs That Air Conditioning Repair Is Needed

1. Short Cycling

“Short cycling” refers to when the compressor inside the air conditioner turns on and off several times during a brief period of time (typically 15 minutes or less). The unit will still blow cold air, but it cycles on and off far more frequently than is normal. There are several potential repair issues that could cause this problem, including a failing compressor or capacitors, a refrigerant leak, or leaking air ducts.

2. Water Leaks

Though air conditioners produce a lot of condensation, this shouldn’t result in a puddle at the base of your unit. Leaks most commonly occur when the condensate line is blocked. This causes moisture to leak from the condensate drain pan, which can lead to water damage. Water puddles may also result from problems with the refrigerant line, which can cause ice to form inside the unit. Refrigerant leaks don’t just hurt air conditioner performance—they also pose a health risk, which makes immediate repairs an absolute must.

3. Foul Odors

A moist, musty smell is often indicative of mold or mildew growth in the air ducts, which requires extensive cleaning. An acrid mechanical smell, on the other hand, could mean the unit’s motor is overheating and may need to be replaced.
