With the warmer weather in full swing, many homeowners take advantage of the sunny season to complete landscaping projects they put off during the cooler months. If you’re ready to overhaul your greenery, it’s important to understand how constant heavy rain can affect your projects. Below are a few ways rainfall can impact some common landscaping projects.

Rain’s Impact on Landscaping Projects

Rain Overwaters Greenery

While plants need water to thrive, too much can stunt their growth. Like other organisms, plants need oxygen, which they receive from small gaps in the soil. When those gaps fill with water, the plants may drown. If you want to install a new flowerbed with rows of delicate buds, the roots may not attach to the wet soil, causing the buds to shrivel. Extra water can also prevent seeds from germinating, as the lack of oxygen will stunt the process and prevent the seed from sprouting.

Rain Causes Muddy Conditions

landscapingToo much rain turns the earth to mud, which makes it difficult to reshape an area during a landscaping project. This is because most plants find it difficult to attach their roots in muddy conditions. To lay new turf, for example, ideal soil should be moist but not soaked, with no standing water. Otherwise, the turf won’t root.

Root rot is another problem brought on by frequent rain. Waterlogged roots attract pests, fungus, and other causes of rot. This is particularly problematic if you want to start a vegetable garden that includes root crops such as carrots and tuberous crops such as potatoes. If the vegetables’ roots are plagued with rot, they won’t be safe to consume. To salvage them, it’s best to place them in a pot, keep them indoors until the rainy season passes, and replant them once the soil is moist.
