The main ingredients used when mixing asphalt for paving or asphalt repair are gravel, sand, and bitumen (the sticky black cement that holds the mixture together). However, depending on the location and purpose of the paving being laid down, different additives may be put into the mix. Additives are used in asphalt for a variety of practical reasons. Below are three of the most common types of additives in asphalt.

Anti-Strip Additives

For a paved asphalt surface to hold together after it's been finished, the bitumen needs to bond to the surface of the gravel and sand pieces in the mixture. However, water can sometimes cause the bitumen to peel back from the gravel, which weakens the pavement and makes it crumble. While sealcoating the surface regularly can help prevent this type of damage, the material itself also needs to be treated in case water seeps past the surface. Anti-strip additives make the bitumen bind more strongly, making the asphalt more resistant to moisture.

Anti-Cracking Additives

Asphalt-RepairAnti-cracking additives make asphalt surfaces more elastic. Temperature changes cause paved surfaces to expand and contract; untreated asphalt can crack as a result of these transformations and require asphalt repairs. When anti-cracking additives are added to asphalt, the surface can flex, stretch, and contract as the temperature changes without developing large cracks.

Anti-Rutting Additives

Rutting refers to a situation in which asphalt develops depressed and sometimes cracked tracks where vehicle wheels pass over it. To avoid rutting, the asphalt needs the right blend of flexibility (to prevent cracks) and rigidity (to help it keep its shape when pressed down). Anti-rutting additives improve the rigidity of the mixture and help it endure more force, thereby delaying the need for asphalt repairs.
